This year's Regional will be held at
Crystal Ice Cave, which is located northwest of
American Falls, Idaho. Here is the
Registration form. The site is near the southern end of the
Great Rift which stretches 62 miles to the Pioneer Mountains. The camping will be primitive among sagebrush thickets and lava outcrops. There will be portable toilets at the site and a meal plan, but all other comforts including shade must be brought with you. The nearest restaurants and food stores are an hour away in American Falls. The climate in the south central Idaho plain in May is inconsistent. The average
temperatures for the end of May are highs of 75 and lows of 45. Please carry at least 5 gallons of water per vehicle. Your pets are welcome, but realize that this is wilderness camping with the existence of coyotes, badgers, and rattle snakes. Dogs must be on leash in camp. The
BLM and
NPS are concerned about off road driving and fire scars. Please park in the designated parking areas or on the road shoulder and carry your gear to the adjacent camp site. There will be a group camp fire. Individual camp fires must be on metal fire pans.
The caving will be plentiful and will include several guided trips per day. Rift caves, ice caves, and conventional lava tubes are available. Family friendly caves are nearby as well as advanced vertical rift caves. For those of you that would prefer to do some exploration on your own there will be opportunities for self-guided trips. Most of the caves are within a half-hour of the camp area.
Dave Kesner and Mike Choules will host a 3D Slide Show of the Caves of Idaho on Saturday night. Doug Owen, NPS geologist will lead an interpretive trip to Kings Bowl and other volcanic features on Sunday morning. The
NCA Region meeting is at 7:30 pm Sunday night.
We have a complete meal plan for the event. We will have breakfast, lunch, and dinner offered on Saturday and Sunday, and breakfast and lunch on Monday. The adult full meal plan will be $45 for 8 meals and the full meal plan for children under 12 will be $30 for 8 meals. Individual meals will be $8 for dinner, $5 for breakfast and $5 for lunch. Meals must be selected on the registration form so we know how much to bring. Please see the menus below for details. The meal schedule will be the same each day; breakfast at 8am, lunch materials available to build bag lunches at 9am, dinner at 6:30pm. All plates, bowls, and utensils will be provided. Bring your own beverage for lunch and dinner.
